A Soldiers Tale

I wrote this poem a few years ago for the knights series. It tells of a knights thoughts of his lady on the evening before the battle as he sits alone with his thoughts and a friend.

It was inspired by a true event on the shores of the Rhyne before the crossing by allied forces when my dad met his best friend from our village who had a preminition of his death in battle the next day. Sadly it came true. The lady my dad's friend was thinking of was his mother.

Before the Battle
Thoughts of a Knight

No tear will I shed that day,
On which my spirit fly's away.

No breath, no sign, no kiss today,
Perhaps not even goodbye may I say.

I don't know why our love felt this way,
Natural just like breathing each and every day.

Why one day must it pass,
This love for such a bonnie lass.

Lost in the universe are my dreams,
Sad and neglected now it seems.

Why don't we ever know,
If beyond the grave our love may go.
