Farewell to a Soldier

In the mists of time we seem to drown,
Lost faces and memories there abound,
And if we linger in the past,
It is only on a love that lasts.

Of days gone by and friends we knew,
Of the times we spent alas too few,
And if tonight I start to cry,
It is not with sadness in my eye.

You see a blessing from heaven I was sent,
The time with you on earth I spent,
Are memories caught in time,
Of you and me and love that binds.

So tonight I shed a tear,
Over all we that held dear,
And though you are no longer here,
My memory takes me there.

You are night and I am day,
I am the one who on earth does pray,
Giving thanks that on that day,
We parted friends forever.

And as I stand where you do lie,
A tear it leaves my weary eye,
As happy times I reminisce,
And thank God for shared heavenly bliss.
