Simple Blessing

My daughter just announced her engagement and so everyone is both happy and excited for her as she begins to plan her wedding. As father of the bride to be it is a time to reflect and praise God. Reflect on how blessed I am to have such a beautiful and intelligent young woman tell me she loves me. Yet knowing that now there is another man she loves just that wee bit more than me.

My mind drifts back to her birth and the first day I saw her. To the miraculous healing by God of her hip that allowed her to be able to walk for the first time without collapsing. Her graduation ceremony from university and the many other steps on a journey a father captures in his heart.

My simple prayer this morning is to be blessed to walk her down the aisle. This simple blessing many take for granted is so special to me because in the absence of my father I had to walk my sister down the aisle and though we know he was there in spirit we both cried that he was not there in person as he had gone home to be with the Lord many years before.

I cannot convey in words feelings of love that reach so deep inside. To have and to hold from this day forth and then she will be on a new journey or rather a new part of her journey. Our children are our legacy to the future. They go to a future where one day we cannot. Time is not cruel it is simply a law of the universe and as it passes we know that we are subject to it whether we wish to obey it or not.

Today is your day or one of them. Fill it with kind words and caring deeds, acts of tenderness and loving thoughts and in this your day take a moment just one simple moment to thank God for it.

What happens on the blog stays in the blog

I just received a reminder (nudge) from a friend that I have not written on my blog for sometime and as the person concerned also tends to remind me that I do not share a great deal of personal information? I will break that habit today.

I just returned from a trip to Las Vegas where I went to meet my daughter who had decided to stay at the Luxor on her 14 day tour of American and so I did too. The rooms are like a slightly upgraded Hampton Inn but clean enough. Yours truly prefers to stay at the Venetian when going for pleasure and the Paris when going on business. We did go to the Venetian for a gondola ride which my daughter and her boyfriend enjoyed very much. Like all dads the smile on my daughters face made the ride a treat though the friendly singing gondolier did an excellent job too. He did want to know where my lady was and laughed when I reported that I had not found her yet.

One show that I would recommend to all couples visiting Vegas is defending the caveman. Though not as well done as the original by Bob Becker the writer and creator of the show you would have to have seen the original back in the early 90's to note the difference. Or was it just the magic of that particular evening? I have to say the gentleman in Vegas gave a very credible performance and I am sure that as more and more visitors learn of this show it will enjoy great success.

It was of course sad to part with my little girl as she headed on to San Fransisco and then New York while I headed back to the Piney Woods and work. It makes you realize the importance of family as the plane takes off in the wee small hours of the morning and you realise that there beneath you sleeping lies one of the most precious people in your life and that a hug from her as we parted the evening before was like hitting the jackpot for over a million dollars.

And for the kind lady on the plane who thought I had lost a lot of money in Vegas when she saw a tear in my eye, she need not have worried. I am after all Scots!
